Oaklandish x Favianna Rodriguez

Favianna Rodriguez is an Oakland based artist-entrepreneur who has helped foster resurgence in political arts both locally and internationally. Named by UTNE Magazine as a "leading visionary artist and changemaker,” Rodriguez is renown for her cultural media projects dealing with social issues such as war, immigration, and globalization, as well as for her leadership in establishing innovative institutions that promote and engage new audiences in the arts.

The dress is a 4-color print on baby rib 100% cotton dress plus extra shoulder accent 2-color print. Form-fitting, raw edges with dangling threads, about 38 inches long, deep V (front and back), and comes in one size.

The shirt is a 4-color print on heathered kelly green tee. Slightly fitted through the body and it's longer length means it hits below the hips. Made out of super-soft 50/50 cotton/poly.

Oaklandish x Swarm Gallery

SHOP/SHOW is the title of latest exhibition at Swarm Gallery in Oakland's growing Jack London District. Featuring a long list of local artists, SHOP/SHOW is a curated "pop-up shop" as well as a gallery showing. Inspired by old photos of outdoor fruit markets, we screen-printed, by hand, wood grain and brick patterns on sheets of cardboard to create a truly unique satellite store. Available for sale are many of our popular shirt designs and hoodies.

Along with our own Oaklandish designs we collaborated with some artists from the show to create a series of limited edition "art t's".

2009 Recap, Hello New Decade

2009 was an exciting year to live in Oakland. From political drama to fried-chicken sandwiches, theater closings to theater openings, bridge trouble to pot clubs, anything and everything seemed to be happening in our city. It was also an exciting year for us at Oaklandish.

We expanded our Oakland warehouse enough to allow us to open our own screen printing shop, Corsair Press. Now we can experiment with advanced techniques, placements, and inks and then channel everything we've learned into bringing you new Oaklandish designs, plus help other groups with their shirts and posters. Our grant program, the Oakland Innovators Award, saw the most money distributed among recipients in the program's history. For 2009, we were lucky enough to be able to give away $30,000 in grants and thousands more in free design work, screen printing, and Oaklandish auction donations. In the spring we teamed up with the always-inspiring Oakland Museum to create an installation at the Oakland Airport highlighting the Innovators Award winners, including Town Park at DeFremery Park and Original Scraper Bikes.

As the year rolled on into summer, people filled the streets, and the sun beat down on Lake Merritt. Thus, the stage was set for the second annual Salsa By The Lake. An event so successful we did it twice in one summer. Hundreds from all over the Bay Area came to Splash Pad Park to dance to live salsa bands Pasion Habanera and Rumbache. The Grand Lake neighborhood came alive and enjoyed two days of music, dancing, vibrancy, and culture.

Two Salsa By The Lake events, plus street festivals like Lakefest, Laurel, and Uptown Unveiled, and then our biggest party of the year: Oaklandish's Lake Merritt Radio Regatta. We saw over a thousand of you take to the lake in nautical hats, play 4-square games lakeside, bid at the Youth Spirit Artworks silent auction, and dance it up at the boathouse with your favorite Linden Street brews.

The summer weather stuck around right up until winter declared itself. The holidays were upon us, our busiest time of year. We shipped out a record number of online orders, set up booths at various Bay Area holiday fairs, and returned to our well-known spot on the corner of Piedmont and Pleasant Valley.

Despite all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we somehow found the time to participate in our first gallery show in years, our installation at Swarm Gallery (which runs until the 24th of this month). Made almost entirely of cardboard, our little old-timey shop offers Oaklandish classics for sale as well as limited-edition shirts designed by Terry Furry, Sarah Smith, John Casey, and Jake Watling.

2009 was also a year of history repeating. For the 13th time you voted us "Best of the East Bay" (best East Bay product and best place to buy a t-shirt) for the Express' annual awards. As much as we love hearing positive words from people out there, it's always nice to see it in print. The Oakland Museum hosted an amazing party celebrating the awards. We set up a booth and showcased our new screen print shop with a live printing demonstration of our new Bay Bridge design.

Another constant for us are our year-round farmers' market weekends. Saturdays we pull up our converted '66 Cortez campervan/mobile store under the palms of the Grand Lake farmers' market and Sundays we set up a simple booth under the towering, creekside eucalyptus trees at Temescal. Fresh local produce, live music, local artisans, and happy Oaklanders are what make Oakland's various farmers' markets a staple of East Bay living.

All in all, it was a great year to live and work in Oakland, California. Spending time with people in our daily lives, at festivals, markets, and parties reminds us of how proud we are to call this city home. A city as diverse as it is complicated, as troubled as it is blessed. It's the opportunity to give back and really be a part of our community that drives us into the New Year. A sincere and heartfelt "thank you" from everyone here at Oaklandish for your continued support as we enter our second decade.

This coming Saturday, January 9, the City of Oakland Public Works Agency is sponsoring the annual rose pruning demonstration at the historic Morcom Rose Garden at 700 Jean Street from 9:00am to 1:00pm. The garden is home to over 5,000 roses and over 900 rose varieties as well as many fountains and waterways. Bring your pruners and gloves and learn professional rose pruning techniques from Master Rosarians. Learn how to make rose hips into salve, tea, and jelly. Identify insects in a workshop sponsored by the Insect Sciences Museum of California (http://www.bugpeople.org). Rain or shine this event is a great way to get to know an Oakland resource a lot of people don't know about.

“Friends of the Oakland Rose Garden” is an Oakland based grassroots group of volunteers committed to making it easy and fun for people to connect with the Morcom Rose Garden. Their goal is to help care for the Garden while building the community around the Garden.

The Morcom Rose garden was originally called the Morcom Amphitheater of Roses, reflecting one of the key design elements conceived by Arthur Cobbledick, the Landscape Architect who created the garden plan in the 1930’s. Fortunately Arthur’s son Bruce Cobbledick, a garden activist in Oakland, donated the original garden drawings and his knowledge of the garden to fill out the garden’s history. Beginning in 1932, as an inspiration of the Businessmen’s Garden Club, Oakland’s Morcom Rose Garden has a history of cooperation and partnership. In response to a culture shaped by The Depression, the garden was designed to highlight the extravagant rose in formal gardens surrounded by a rugged natural setting. It was a WPA project, Mayor Frank Morcom planted the first rose in 1933, and for nearly eight decades the Morcom Rose Garden has offered Oakland a stimulating and restful place to go.

The "Dedicated Deadheaders" is the Master Volunteer program started by Tora Rocha in response to the City's budget cuts. These volunteers go through a training program, and when completed they earn the "Now Famous" tie-dyed vest, then they are able to work in the garden on there own. This core group of people have been very instrumental in keeping Morcom and the neighborhood thriving this year.

Oaklandish and the recently opened Farley's East (http://www.farleyscoffee.com) have collaborated to make an Uptown inspired shirt that goes directly to a great cause, the 2010 Oakland Innovator Awards. Printed by hand on an American Apparel "cranberry" colored shirt. Available in a v-neck as well and only at Farley's East at 33 Grand Avenue downtown. Supplies are super limited to make sure you get down there soon. If you've never been, Farley's is a fantastic cafe with a great neighborhood vibe without the strip mall, corporate chain feel of newer coffee outlets. Perfect for breakfast, lunch (we love the chicken panini), and pre-theater drinks. Farley's offers a huge selection of magazines, art exhibits, and friendliness.

Oaklandish Rig

After a disastrous break-down of the 1966 Clark Cortez Oaklandish rig and waiting six hours for a tow-truck big enough to tow it, we got it back and running!

The Piano Man (spotted here in his classy, yellow car) is letting us post-up in front of his store and Piano school on the corner of Piedmont Ave. and Pleasant Valley. We will be there every day except Mondays until Christmas.

Here we are putting the rig to sleep on our corner. Gotta tuck the rig in right for the cold nights!

Come see us there to get your holiday gifts! We are in front of the Piedmont Piano Company Tuesday-Friday and Sunday, noon-6:00 (until 7:00 starting 12/18), and Saturdays 3:00-6:00.

Pumpkin Carving Contest!

Oaklandish presents a Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest:

This Saturday we will be posted up at one of our favorite spots, the corner of Piedmont Ave. and Pleasant Valley. Our pumpkin carving contest will go from 11:00-5:00. Bring your carved Jack O' Lanterns to decorate the trees and parking lot of the Piano Company! There will also be Trick-or-Treating and a Halloween parade along Piedmont Ave. Happy Halloween!

Oaklandish Field Trip to the Zoo

It might have been raining hard, but that didn't stop the Oaklandish crew from enjoying our field trip to the Oakland Zoo. The Sun Bear, despite his name, didn't seem to mind the rain either, as he showed off climbing to the top of this branch.

The sleeping bats and otters were also fun to see.

We even got to enjoy free turtle rides. Oaklandish loves the zoo!

Oaklandish is very excited to collaborate with the Oakland Zoo's Conservation project on an up-coming t-shirt design. Our next t-shirt will feature a chimpanzee from the Oakland Zoo, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Budongo Snare Removal project in Uganda.

Oaklandish at the Graffiti Battle

Oaklandish came thru and had fun at the Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle on Saturday. We enjoyed the grand opening of Town Park by K-Dub, one of the 2009 Oakland Innovators award winners.

Estria and the other judges took a while to choose the winners out of all these dope pieces.

Everyone enjoyed live performances by Kev Choice and Phroahe Monch.

Full Moon Buy Night at Jack London Square

We were happy to be right next to Jack London's log cabin at the Oakland Unwrapped Full Moon Buy Night event. There were several local artisans and even an ice-skating rink set up for the night market. Adorable kids had fun on White Fang.

We enjoyed the amazing live percussion of the Cougar Cadet Drumline, who came through and tore it up with their Southern Drumline Style.

Eat Real

Oaklandish was "Eating Real" all weekend, or at least drinking some delicious beer from the beer shed at the food festival. The beautiful weather made it nice to be on the water at Jack London Square, although it got pretty hot inside the truck.

Radio Regatta

The 4th Annual Radio Regatta at the Lake Merritt Boathouse was a great party!
The preparations for the event started with a keg delivery via gondola from Lake Chalet (which is now up and running).

This was one of eleven kegs that we drank. Thanks to Linden Street Brewery and Pacific Coast Brewing Company for their generous donations.
Over 1,000 folks showed up throughout the day to enjoy the free gondola rides and half-priced boat rentals.

There were eight amazing DJs spinning in the Boathouse and 4 Square of the East Bay got game-time goin on the patio.

Youth Spirit Artworks, Town Park, Cycles of Change, and Bay Area Girls Rock Camp were there to represent the 2009 Oakland Innovators award winners. Cycles of Change blended up some delicious smoothies with a pedal-powered bike blender.

The crew (and captains) of Oaklandish also had fun on the lake.

Innovators Exhibit in Jack London Square

Oaklandish and the 2009 Oakland Innovators and Art-in-Action award winners put up an exhibit in the windows of some donated space in Jack London Square.

The display shows the amazing work that the organizations and artists who received this year's grants are doing, and the Oaklandish display describes the grant program.

There should be lots of folks in Jack London Square next weekend (8/28-8/30) for the "Eat Real" food festival, so they can check out the display then.

Oaklandish is Ready to Broadcast

We got our transmitter fixed up so we can do our microbroadcast
at the Radio Regatta!

The music that DJ's are gonna spin at the the Lake Merritt Boathouse will be broadcast across the waters of the lake so folks can tune in while they enjoy the free gondola rides and half-priced boat rentals. Bring your own radio so you can listen all afternoon (8/23, from 1:00-7:00).

Laurel Street Fair

Oaklandish was representing at the Laurel Street Fair. We got to enjoy the tunes of Rumbache (an Oaklandish favorite who played at the first Salsa by the Lake this year). This fan of Oaklandish, sporting our new "Keep Baseball in Oakland" t-shirt had fun Salsa dancing with Rumbache.

Scraper Bikes also showed up for the Laurel Street Fair.

Oaklandish at Lakefest

Hundreds of people showed up to Lakefest last weekend. There were kids' activities, performers, and many vendors, including Oaklandish.

One of the performers was local artist Kev Choice Ensemble, an Oaklandish favorite.

Oaklandish will be at the Best of the East Bay on Friday, August 7th, from 5:00-12:00. This party will be at the Oakland Museum and is free to all ages. We will be at the Laurel Street Fair on Saturday from 1:00-6:00.

Oakland Reppin in D.C.

8th grade students of Dolores Huerta Learning Academy in the Fruitvale of Oakland visited Washington D.C. Students visited many historical museums, the Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials, and the White House, where students represented Oakland in their fly Oaklandish shirts. The trip was a great success, and the crew at Oaklandish is always down to hook up shirts for a good cause.

Salsa by the Lake; The Sequel

The second Salsa by the Lake of the year was a huge success. Hundreds of folks from the Town came out to enjoy the live music, dancing, and beautiful Sunday sunshine. Lots of people took advantage of the free dance lessons taught by Isaac Kos-Read.

We loved the wonderful live music of "Pasion Habanera."

We sold our Salsa by the Lake event t-shirts and dresses, gave out hundreds of free Oaklandish stickers, and spread the word about the Oakland Innovators award winners. Among the hundreds of Oakland residents at Salsa by the Lake, was local rapper Dru Down.

New Oaklandish Apparel

The "Keep Baseball in Oakland" shirt was designed with the future in mind. Half of all proceeds go toward local Little League scholarships for kids and teens in Oakland who need it the most.

Besides cheering for the Oakland A's at the Coliseum, those of us who grew up here in Oakland used to get juiced as kids about the giraffe murals on the pillars at the Harrison St. freeway exit. We are proud to release our new t-shirt featuring the giraffe.

Favianna Rodriguez, the 2009 Oaklandish Arts-in-Action award winner held a bi-annual open studios with her collective, Ink and Paper on July 11th and 12t. There were prints, live art, and printmaking demonstrations.

One of the activities was screen-printing a mystery "edible ink" on tortillas, including ones that said "Tortilla Supreme Sotomayor" and "Indian Land."

Cycles of Change

This 2009 Innovators award winner ended the school year by
taking the kids from their Bike Club program on a camping trip.

They got lots of plans for up-coming projects too.

Cycles of Change and PUEBLO will be running an employment training and "healthy living" business development program for 32 youth this summer!

The program is based out of their new commercial storefront and community center in San Antonio/Fruitvale, and includes sustainable systems education, bike restoration, and fresh food production, distribution, and marketing/sales. The crew at Oaklandish got the chance to check out the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp in action.The girls learn an instrument and form a band in the one-week session of the camp.

They will perform at the Oakland Metro Opera House, 630 3rd St. The showcase for Session One is Saturday, June 27th at 2:00pm and the Session Two Showcase is July 11th.

Oaklandish at Uptown Unveiled

Hundreds of people came out to the "Uptown Unveiled" event on Thursday, June 18th. Telegraph was closed from 16th St. to West Grand, and musicians, artists, and vendors lined the Street. The event was planned to celebrate Oakland's arts and entertainment district.

K-Dub, a 2009 Oakland Innovators award winner, was representing with Hood Games at the "Uptown Throwdown" skateboard contest.

There was also a fashion show at Uptown Unveiled that featured some of the fresh apparel of Oaklandish.

And here's the Kev Choice Ensemble, the head-liner, playing their amazing music while sporting the Oaklandish black and gold pigeon T-shirt.

Cabeza Exhibit

Keith "K-Dub" Williams, one of the 2009 Oakland Innovators award winners and founder of Town Park, used the grant money given to him by Oaklandish for the "Cabeza Project." He commissioned local Bay Area artist s to decorate several helmets to be worn by the youth who skate at Town Park. The crew at Oaklandish, among many others, checked out this exhibit at the Raw Gallery at the Oakland Art Murmur.

Oaklandish and Hood Games collaborated on the Town Park project. Oakland Kajukenbo Student Performance

On June 13th, the crew from Oaklandish got to attend a benefit for the non-profit Kung Fu Grocery, one of the 2009 Oakland Innovators award winners. The summer camp provides kids with Kung Fu practice and practical skills to earn their own money through working at a student- run store. The performance was impressive and moving, and it was great to see the support from the families and the community, and the dedication of the kids. The benefit was very successful, raising over $8,000 for the program.

Salsa by the Lake

The fun continued all weekend long! On Sunday afternoon Oaklandish put on the third annual Salsa by the Lake, which was a huge success! It was located at the lovely Splash Pad Park across from the Grand Lake Theater. We enjoyed free Salsa dance lessons taught by Isaac Kos-Read and the beautiful Salsa tunes of live band Rumbache. Between sets of the band, we kept the dancing goin' with D.J. Juanka. The sun came out and hundreds of people enjoyed the event. More fun Oaklandish events coming soon.

Malcolm X Jazz Festival

Oaklandish had a big weekend! We kicked it at the 9th annual Malcolm X Jazz Festival all day Saturday. The sun finally came out in the afternoon and we enjoyed the wonderful live music with the hundreds of other folks who came out to the festival.

This weekend Oaklandish will be at the "West Oakland Green Scene" at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park this Saturday, June 6th, and the Temescal Street Fair this Sunday, June 7th. We will be at lots of other festivals this summer, so stay tuned!

So we just updated our webstore with some great new products, including this hat, which we are really excited about. We also have a sweet wallet, a new sweatshirt, a new womens shirt, a new kids shirt, and a new infant onesie!

3rd Annual Salsa By The Lake

We will be throwing our 3rd annual Salsa by the Lake event this Sunday, May 31st!

Bring the whole family out for a day of dance lessons and amazing live music performed by the incredible salsa band Rumbache!

The event starts at 1pm and ends at 6pm, and will take place at Lake Merritt's Splash Pad Park (located across the street from the Grand Lake Theatre)

Scraper Bike Ride

A few months ago we went on a little ride with the infamous Scraper Bikes. If you live in Oakland, or really anywhere in the Bay Area, chances are you've seen these guys. Tyrone is a really awesome guy and is one of this years innovators award recipients. Youth Spirit Artworks
is another one of the 2009 Oaklandish Innovators
award winners.This organization employs homeless and low-income youth through creative art projects. They decorate recycled furniture and create art in public spaces, such as benches and murals in local parks. Some of their beautiful
tables and chairs were featured in the Oakland Airport Exhibit along with other Oaklandish Innovators
award winners.

The grant money will help fund a project to decorate the benches and bollards in North Oakland with a theme focused on health, which references the health-related outreach done in this community by the Black Panthers.

Youth Spirit Artworks and other Innovators award winners will be present at the annual Oaklandish Radio Regatta on August 23, 2009. Stay tuned for more information about this day of fun and other up-coming Oaklandish events.

Kickin' it with Innovators in Oakland

After celebrating all of the 2009 Oaklandish Innovators award winners and the Arts-in-Action award winner at an exhibit reception at the Oakland Airport in early April, the crew at Oaklandish got the chance to go check out the different organizations and actually see them in action. Seeing the pioneering and creative work that these Innovators are doing in Oakland got us even more excited to work with them. We got to ride along with Cycles of Change, after meeting up with them at their Bike Club at Bret Harte Middle School, where they teach the kids about nutrition and bike mechanics.

Then we set out on our bikes and rode all the way to Lake Temescal, where we enjoyed some healthy snacks and fun on the beach.

The kids loved the adventure, and Oaklandish loved it too! The 2009 Oaklandish Innovators award grant money will go toward buying helmets and locks for the kids, and help support the Earn-a-Bike program.

This internet-only series begins with the man behind the mustache, Oakland A's player ROLLIE FINGERS. He will be followed by more patron saints and sinners of the Town.
